READY
R&D Local Micro Factory for Textile-to-Textile Recycling
As part of KLOTHING at The Royal Danish Academy, I contributed to READY, a Danish research and innovation project exploring how local production technology can support more responsible textile production. Based around an R&D micro-factory in Herning, the project developed and tested textile materials made first from recycled fibres and from locally sourced bio-based fibres.
My work involved weaving and knitting material prototypes through a material-driven design approach, with a focus on the technical and aesthetic potential of the project’s yarns. I further investigated printed pattern design as a strategy for prolonging a textile’s use phase, allowing areas of wear to become part of its visual expression.
The project was led by VIA University College in collaboration with The Royal Danish Academy, Danish Technological Institute, University of Southern Denmark, Aalborg University, Lifestyle & Design Cluster. Participating companies: KVADRAT, Nybo Workwear, Bestseller, HAACK Recycling, Sontex DK and Kjellerup Væveri. READY was funded by Innovation Fund Denmark.
Woven prototypes: hemp, nettle, wool, linen. Woven on a digital dobby loom (ARM). Collection of fibres.
Recycled cotton and lyocell. Woven on a digital Dobby loom (ARM) and knit on Stoll Digital Knit Machine. Collections and yarn samples. Yarn spun at R&D-factory at VIA, Herning, DK.
Collection of print development. Layered colour variations, broken lines and tone-on-tone prints as ways of making abrasion less visually pronounced, allowing the textile to retain its aesthetic quality through use.
